So our first tournament, the Headhunters Hat, went off pretty smoothly.
We had 39 people sign up, most were our local players, but 3 from Singapore, 4 from Brunei and 2 from west Malaysia. In the end 36 people showed up (the west Malaysians and 1 local guy just never pitched).
We played 5-aside with 7 or 8 per team, which in hindsight was a bit tight. Next year we'll have bigger teams and aim for 7-aside.
5 Teams were purple (Purple Reighn), green (Green Peace), red (Chillis), yellow (Yellow Sunshine) and blue (Barracudas) - a colour scheme which looks awesome in the pictures. We played a round robin format, so every team got 4 games. Then teams ranked 3 & 4, which was blue and red respectively, played off for the losers bracket. Red, who lost the first two games of the day dismally, won that game.
The finals were between No.1 ranked green and purple - who incidentally was the only team that green had lost to in their second game of the day. The final was tight and some surprisingly awesome play, considering the level of play at the tournament was rather modest. Ultimate purple beat green 4-3 for the champions title.
Green, not to be outdone, walked away with the Spirit Award beating the rest of the field by some considerable points.
All in all, it was a great tournament, but also a great learning experience so far as new Ultimate skills and strategies go, as well as organising tournaments.
Headhunters Hat 2011 has already been mooted and we look forward to arranging a bigger and better event. Watch this space.
We roped in renowned and award winning video and photography production house Scubazoo (scubazoo.com) to video the event for us. And here's a highlight reel they produced for us:
