thanks owen,

I'm hoping/assuming given its a world games year, most people will be making the trip??? its going to be great, just imagine fields that have more than 60% grass cover...

wow, now thats just crazy talk!

Its all systems go to get over there. We hope to return to the old tradition known as 'having warm up tournaments' instead of generally not playing frisbee and hoping that this would make us play better.

Queensland and Canberra are going to run some tournaments. We'll need to sort out some timings to ensure the season runs smoothly this year.

IBeam are. Hopefully I make the team ;D .

I have two rookie questions: What is the national team from perth (or teams if there is more than one) and what team do you play for owen?

Sublime (open) and Primal (women's). Heads Of State.

YEAH host's wildcard spot

I don't think the fact that world games is next year will have much effect on the number of players that head to perth.  The world games hopefuls are only a select few and likely to be playing anyway (whether or not world games was on).  The hardest part women's ultimate is convincing some new players or intermediate players they want to spend the money to go.  Not sure whether our ladies will make it this year.

There is a suggestion going around to start a 2nd-tier nationals tournament for teams that fail to qualify next year. That way B-teams and smaller clubs will have something to play towards for the whole season. I imagine at the beginning there would only be enough teams for an open division.

What do people think of that idea?

-Tom

Title: Re: Nationals 2009 in Perth
Post by: simmo on October 10, 2008, 12:51:38 AM
Aside from B teams, who didn't go to Nationals this year who would otherwise attend another tournament?

Title: Re: Nationals 2009 in Perth
Post by: littletom on October 10, 2008, 01:45:41 AM
A couple of Eastern region teams missed out and yes....the dreaded B-teams. Fakulti had the only 'pure' (ie, not the firestorm/chilly mixers) B-team that made it to nationals and they came last.

Could be a venue for teams like: HOS youth, Manly, Westies, Umlaut, Newwie B, Fyshwick United 2, third fire storm team, Armidale? the smaller South Australian clubs, Tassy, North Queensland, Byron Bay, Fak B, the B team of whatever rises up out of the ashes of barefoot (Well Heeled? Socks and Sandals? Steel Cap?)

There is a teeming undercurrent of players that want to have more involvement in the open season than a one day tourney and regionals. I imagine that given 'permission' as such to host a 2nd tier national plate comp, they could organise their own tournament and provide some more direction to non-elite single gender ultimate. Eventually, once it has grown a bit more as well, the women would also be able to do the same.

Of course, nationals being in Perth might drive numbers from the East down again...

Title: Re: Nationals 2009 in Perth
Post by: thebozzman on October 10, 2008, 05:35:40 AM
I think the Westies were a once only thing. Don't think we will have the talent next year to compete, even at regionals.

Title: Re: Nationals 2009 in Perth
Post by: Tenk283 on October 10, 2008, 08:01:05 PM
I think its a good idea. Only problem is numbers. Who would wanna go if there are only going to be 4 teams there?

The newcastle B-team might want to attend a 2nd tier tourney, if it was near. But I can't see them travelling across the country for it.... Unless there is a real push by the players.

These would be the current allocations for Perth (as per AFDA policy)
E5
N2
S3 + 1
W1
NZ 1
Total 13

Wildcards (based on attendance at Regionals - NO host Wildcard)

If W have 4 teams of 15 (60 players) at regionals and the other regions the same as earlier this year:

Most likely scenario would be  W  N  E (for the 3 Wildcards)

Then if not taken up  E  then W  then N

What is the likelihood of each zone taking their full allocation??

I'd be surprised if NZ fronted up. All 4 South spots will be taken, but I wouldn't bank on any more than 7 teams going to Southern Regionals (2 x Chilly, 2 x HoS, 2 x Karma, maybe Evolution or Tassie).

i cant see 3 firestorm teams making it. It will be hard enough to get 2 teams there gotta love the WA problem in reverse.  Ill be there all ready looking for happy hour specials to get a decent price for a flight to perth. Maybe need to go QANTAS for free booze on friday night.

Its a pain in the ass flying across the country isnt it? Book flights as early as you can, it makes a huge difference to your hip pocket.

QANTAS may have the free booze, but you'll be taking your life into your hands flying with them...

First tournament of the year (Golden City Classic) has been run and won...

1. Chilly White
2. Heads of State
3. Karma
4. GFUC
5. Roflcopter
6. Chilly Red (withdrew Sunday morning due to injuries)

1. Team Box
2. One of the Honey teams
3. The other Honey team
4. GFusion

Chilly v HoS final, both missing a couple of guns, Chilly took it out 13-11. Team Box smashed Honey in their final 12-4.

FU cleaned up at Share the Love last weekend.

Newcastle sent to decent split teams, so should be trouble once they combine for the rest of the season.

So Thong made it to quarters at kaimana and HoS results remain to be seen.

Curiously and curiously....

I guess the next installment in the story is the BC invite, when most of the teams will lock horns. Looking forward to it.

Title: Re: Nationals 2009 in Perth
Post by: simmo on February 19, 2009, 08:47:35 PM
HoS finished 10th or so. Only about half of their Kaimana team will make the cut on their Nats team.

I'm starting to think about wildcards. Last year North and East got one each (was there a 3rd? Can't remember), but with North not likely to send two teams and NZ not coming, who is likely to get them? I'm not even gonna bother try and do the maths properly, but I reckon South might end up with 5 spots (10 teams going to Regionals). I'd predict the AFDA spot going to West, but Singapore and Phillipines are interested in sending teams too. So where do they fit in?

So at a guess...
North - Firestorm
East - Fak X, Fak Y, I-Beam, Fyshwick, Manly...maybe Hills?
West - Sublime, Fear
South - Chilly A, Chilly B, HoS, Karma...take a stab and say Tassie.
Int - Singapore, Phillipines

?

Sublime are having 2 teams at regionals (A (antisocial) and O (obnoxious)). I ham hope these are the 2 perth teams (not Fear) as i am playing in the second sublime team!

And simmo, got a really early stab at #1 for Triple J's hottest 100 2010? (hehe)

Title: Re: Nationals 2009 in Perth
Post by: Tiger on February 24, 2009, 02:01:23 AM
From the east? Wildcard are having some teething issues finding out if players can play Nationals, but probably one team. If the idea gets off the ground, a 'best of the rest' team using bits of Wildcard, Manly, Southside and Hills women will go to Perth.

North: Sultry are at least having practices which says something, no idea about Minx.

South: Honey and Box.

That's all I know.

fACTory Girls?

That's not a whole lot of women coming over!
Perth will have two - Kaos and Primal, so I guess the wildcard spot should hopefully be ours.

Title: Re: Nationals 2009 in Perth

North
- Sultry
- ?

South
- Box
- Honey
- Honey B / Tassie ?
- Indies
- Bush

West
- Primal
- Kaos

East
- Wildcard
- Sugar Mags
- other Sydney team? (Southside/Hills/Manly)
- Canberra?

There were 10 women's teams at Nationals last time it was in Perth (2005), it wouldn't surprise me if there were only 10 again. Given that there were only 14 at Coffs Harbour last year....

BC invite results
Women: Wildcard take down Factory Girls 15-8 in final.
Men:
Semis: Newwie club FU 15-12 and Sublime beat up one of the Fak teams
Final: Sublime dominate Newwie, 15-5. Seems like newwie blew their load against FU.

Good games all!

No surprise in the women's. Must admit, hearing news of a Sublime/I-Beam final at training was a bit of a surprise. I know Chilly were 6th and Firestorm near the bottom somewhere...what were the full standing.

Title: Re: Nationals 2009 in Perth
Post by: JMc on March 01, 2009, 06:32:59 AM
Sub-pickup-lime 1
I-Beam 2
Don't think a 3/4 was played between FU and Fak? (didn't see it happen, anyway)

Bottom 4 of the men's draw fiddled around a bit so we could get different teams seeing each other (specifically, so both us and Fak could play HoS - cheers to Chilly for letting us do this). As such, dunno whether we're giving a particular order to the bottom 4... though Firestorm would probably be at the bottom, having lost to each team.

Women's = Wildcard, Factory, Sultry, Honey

Come to Brissy next year for the 2010 BC Invitational!

Thanks to the Canberra boys for looking after us and putting on a good tournament. Sublime showed how important it is and how much better you play when you stay up until 3am drinking. A few pick-ups helped as well even if they were the last ones to make it home on sunday morning.

I don't think the Sublime pickups from the BC invitational were planning on playing nationals with Sublime. Surely Sublime will have no problems with numbers anyway. I'm not sure if they were hoping to play nats with some other team though.

So what's the deal with spots to go to Nationals?

Are the various regional championships just rehearsals to work out seedings because any team that wants to go to Perth will be able to?

East had 6? 7? spots from last time, but only 5 that I can think of who would be willing to make the trek.

North looks pretty vacant. One Firestorm team want to go, surely another team could be congealed from the scraps left over.

West, well, duh.

South looks like a battle royale. 5 teams that want spots. Why isn't Buttons playing HoS/Tiggers?

Title: Re: Nationals 2009 in Perth
Post by: simmo on March 08, 2009, 07:46:00 AM
'Cos he's a chump.

North gets 2 spots - Firestorm to take one, doubt the other will go (maybe Slamtown?)
South gets 4 - Chilly, Karma, HoS, and probably Chilly B.
East 5 - Fak X, Fak Y, Fyshwick, I-Beam, Manly
West 1 - Sublime
AFDA allocation - if anyone, West will get it

No NZ, leaving 3 wildcards, 4 if a 2nd North team doesn't go.

The wildcard allocations depend on number of players at Regionals, divided by number of slots already taken. At an educated guess, West will probably get the first one, followed by South and possibly South again, given they're going to have more players than East at Regionals. However outside the four likely to qualify, only Tassie might possibly go.

There's always the possibility of international teams (Singapore, Phillipines) getting spots.

Women's division will be lucky to reach 12 teams...
Primal, Kaos, Sultry, Indies, Honey, Box, Bush, Wildcard, 2nd Sydney team, Factory Girls, Sugar Mags...have I missed anyone?

Title: Re: Nationals 2009 in Perth
Post by: simmo on March 08, 2009, 07:48:12 AM
Should also note that today Chilly beat HoS 15-8 and Chilly B beat HoS B 15-3, with all four teams at or very close to full strength.

Title: Re: Nationals 2009 in Perth
Post by: wally on March 08, 2009, 08:02:46 AM
So what teams do we have wanting to go to Nats?
5 from East (one of which is Umlaut, who will need quite a few pickups to get there - yes this is a plug)
5 from South
1 from North
? from West
Freakshow?
Manila or some other Asian team?

I'm assuming NZ doesn't want a spot, but maybe they do.

Anyway, it looks as though Regionals is just seeding for all regions, and all teams who want to attend will be able to.

AS long as those players played in our regionals on a team that didnt qualify, then as many as the team wants. I believe we are limited to one pickup from outside the region but a bit shady on that rule.

Eastern Qualifiers are: Fyshwyck United, I - Beam, Fakulti XY & Umlaut.

To clarify (or be pedantic), the weekend in the east went:

Fyshwyck
Ibeam
Fak ?
Fak ?
Manly (Brick)
Umlaut
Hills
Westies
Newcastle B (i think the last three are right, apologies if wrong)

Fak didnt play their play off game, and will be playing it later at training. Pete Gardner didnt play for Fak X at all on the weekend. Fyshwyck and Ibeam were a step above both Fak teams on the weekend. Fak Y were the stronger, going down by 3/4 in both the semi agaisn Fyshwyck and the pool game against I beam. Fak X (minus Pete G) lost to both teams with scores of around 6/8 i think. Brick (Manly) pushed Fak X to 13-11, and also played a combined Fak team (missing a few top names) in the arvo instead of the Fakulplayoff and lost 11-10 (after being up 8-4) for shits and giggles. Brick aint going though, and Umluat comfortably beat everyone below them while having an excellent game with Brick, ending 15-9 in Bricks favour.

Good times.

Good times.

Newcastle B was last. I think Hills ended up beating Westies.

Umlaut are looking better than they did this time last year. Good luck to 'em.

That's because this time last year Umlaut were looking back on a good season and putting the flab on.  Now we're only half way through it.

So when can we look forward to a draw being released?

So when can we look forward to a draw being released?

Probably about an hour before first game is scheduled to start. But don't worry, it'll be changed at least 3 times after that prior to the start of games, the final one being 35 seconds before the starting hooter.

Draw should be released by Rod Today

We were just waiting on

A) Whether Geelong Open were coming
B) What was happening with BUSH/Suffer Jets

Just curious, but is anyone (other than Pissy on twitter) going to be putting up any scores from matches?

The Podcasting gear is going to Perth so there might be someone calling the finals, but there are no promises and the audio should be available about a week after the final.

That makes NO sense! Why put it there!?

Do any of the WA organising folk have details about the band/comedy act/beer garden?

all i kno is beer garden is going to be serving same drinks as the party, again at very competitive prices (for WA).  band will be plying straight after showcase, dont know who they are.  The comedy is a regular thing at little creatures (brewery) so they will be doing that at the fields (again dont know much about it)

hope that helps  :P

Nobody has any comments on the draw? For the mens I think it's a bit odd that the semi final is the third hard game on Saturday (unless you skip the pre-semi by being top of the crossover pool) when there are only 2 games on Friday.

Well, i may as well post the nationals results i know. If anyone else finds out anything from their respective sources, mens or womens, wuld be appreciated.

Fyschwick went undefeated day 1, beating Chilly 17-12. Both are through to power pools

I Beam and Fak Y are both through. Playing off for top of pool now if am not mistaken.

Pool E is the most interesting, with HoS, Firestorm and Karma all fighting for 2 spots in power pools. Dont know any outcomes of that, but firestorm and karma was a close game (just dont know who won).

Sublime and Fak X are also both through. They play each other tonight for top of pool.

As far as womens goes, all i know is wildcard won both there games very comfortably. Honey got closest, going down 17-8.

Hate to tell you mate but your not gonna like the results.

Ibeam topped pool D, beating Fak y 17-13

Sublime topped pool F, apparently smashing Fak x in the showcase game 17-6 or something. Ouch. Minimal Pete Garnder and the loss of the perenially injured Phil White before the tournament even started cant have helped, but still its a hammering.

And in Pool E, HoS topped the pool and Karma came second, apparently beating Firestorm on game point, after firestrom having been up 13-9, to move into the top half of the draw, relegating Firestorm to the bottom half of the draw for now. best possible finish of 7th i think, if they can fight there way back up. Still, thats gotta hurt.

Nooo damnit. Can't believe we lost to Karma again argh. Oh well, lets hope they get 7th then. Everything seems to be in order otherwise those, apart from that whole 17-6 debacle.
Cheers for the update.

thats where i got half my info from, the other half being from phone conversations to the Fak boys, which ill be making pretty regularly. Hopefully the combination of the 2 means i have the means side of the draw figured out pretty well. As for womens its just sms's to the cousin to see if she can be bothered replying, so less chance of finding out much outside Wildcard results. But ill keep up the efforts, its far prefereable to doing assignments anyway.

So do i Lu-wee. Also hearing the latest results makes me even more wish i was there. Damn lack of liquidity,

Fak X lost both games to Chilly and Ibeam, relatively comfortable wins by both i think.

Fak y lost both there games...in heart breakers. 17-15 loss to sublime after even at 15, and 18-16 loss to Karma, after being up 16-15. Karma are kings of comeback it seems. If i were any Syndye Uni player (which i am) i would be getting sick of loseing big games to South Australians. But gotta pay them credit, they are going better than everyone (except Simmo) thought, and congrats to them, if they can win those close ones.

HoS loss both there games, playing off with Fak X tomorrow for a spot on the top 6. Fak Y have to defeat the undefeated Fyschwick now for a shot...thats gotta hurt after getting so close twice. Fyshwick have almost secured their semis spot, unless they lose to Fak.

All i know from bottom pool is that Firestrom rolled through. I Beam and CHilly play off tomorrow for the other top of the pool semis spot. Sublime and Karma play tomorrow, both probably through to semis play ins on the strength of their wins over Fak.

And once again....in Womens...nothing except Wildcard Results, who are still undefeated, beating Box 17-12 to take out top of their pool and beating Factory Girls in the first of the power pool games 17-8.

No results, but I believe the rankings at the end of pool play were
Pool A
1. Sugar Mags
2. Kaos
3. Factory Girls
4/5/6 Sultry/Primal/Suffer Jets.

Pool B
1. Wildcard
2. Box
3. Honey?
4/5. Indies
4/5. Honey Gs

Hope so. I've sent the digital voice recorder over, and will send a reminder to my commentator shortly.

I'm going to see if its possible to get the 3rd/4th playoffs too.

But the audio wont be available for about a week until the recorder comes back and its processed.
Stay tuned to Aus-Ultimate.

Chilly defeated Fyshwick 17-12(??) in men's final (Chilly up 9-4 at half)

left before the presentations so don't have any other info.

Not 100% sure of the order of those bottom 3 places, but the teams are correct.

It's true.  Apparently FEAR's pickups were more valuable than ours.  The results from Umlaut's games indicate that the bottom four teams were all evenly matched.

Cath Matthews from Honey was female MVP, incidentally. From what I saw of her play in Honey's semi-final, I'd say she deserves the title.

Sorry Meegs. Got to stick up for my team mate here. Cath had an amazing tournament and was key to getting the disc moving for Honey. She was so consistent, both on O and D, and just never stopped running. I know I overheard a number of teams complaining how hard she was to mark. From personal experience, I know how they feel.

Congrats btw on the bronze. Such a good match, if only it went the other way ;)

Fair enough Mel. I actually saw you'd replied yesterday and was too scared to read it in case I made you mad! I got Leanne to check it first for me :)

Funny thing was, that in our experiences of playing Honey, we actually thought it was you who was the real stand out for the team, particularly as a play maker! Having marked both of you, I felt much more out of my depth when you were running me ragged! Just my opinion of course!

I don't think anyone will ever agree on a tournament MVP and other teams tend to see things differently than you see it from within the team.
