AUG 2006 - Friday night - Mojo's in Adelaide.

Anyone remember that? I don't.

Massive night

Screw NUFL.

Screw Worlds.

Screw Nationals.

We know where it's at - University Ultimate.

Unigames in just over a week - I'm getting very excited. Although of course I have to talk down UNSW - we have had a couple of our girls pull out recently which has hurt our chances. But screw that as well. I'm just looking forward to getting up there, playing some sweet frisbee and partying on with all you beautiful people.

It's glorious...

The kid has got some game boys, definitely has a chance at the Barramundis.

Unfortunately Wood won't be playing for the Barramundis. He will still be trying to get over his corked leg, which judging by how long it takes for him to get over injuries, will keep him on the sidelines for at least another 24-36 months.

Where is Newcastle on that list? Are they not sending a team this year?

I notice that there are now advertising banners on Ultitalk!

This is actually quite exciting I think, in a way - possibly the first time I have seen advertising on an Ultimate website, other than for Gaia, VC and other ultimate related paraphenalia.

Just a question - where is the money going?

Hahaha nice one Mozza.

This thread is gold - keep em coming.

I present Ken Shepherd - former Australian Idol contender.

Also Barrie thinks he might moonlight as a certain AFL player, minus the hair...

Haha sweet night!

I think that if someone had come to Australia to play with the Dingos because they didn't think that they would make thier own team - that would annoy me.

Would that actually ever happen though?

Would someone really travel all the way to another country, just to be able to play in World Championships? For a foreign nation???

I think that the chances of that happening are extremely remote. It's a hella expensive way to play some high level frisbee. And I don't see the incentive for people to do it either - surely half the reason to get to a world championships is to represent your country, not some other random one.

On the other hand, if you were a top player from another country who came here to work or study, and was good enough to make the dingos (which I think is a more realistic scenario) I personally wouldn't have a problem with that - but I could see how a local, who is on the cusp of selection, could get annoyed.
55  Regional / Australasia / Re: NUFL1 Tipping on: August 08, 2007, 05:56:39 AM
Chilly = threepeat winners of Nationals, why won't their NUFL team make the grade?

Is it just because they're Gackless and if so, do they really rely on one player that much at a Nationals level?

T.

Good question - I'm really interested to see how Chilly goes. Yes there are lots of other very good players on Chilly, but it's Tom ffs, a massive out.
56  Regional / Australasia / Re: Internationals on National Teams on: August 03, 2007, 02:56:53 AM
Not really on topic, but I have often thought about a similar issue. In sports like soccer, there are certain regulations about eligibility for players, similar to Ultimate I guess (but probably stricter). But there seems to be no regulations on coaches. You can get whoever you want to coach your national team, so you end up with these guns for hire like Guus Hiddink, wandering the globe. Why is this so? Why aren't there eligibility restrictions on coaches, like there are for players?

Anyway I digress.

It seems that as far as Ultimate goes, eligibility rules are fairly lax, and the powers that be seem pretty eager to look the other way if needed - and that's fine by me. The only criteria I would put on a player is that they attend the training camps/selections, and fulfilled the official criteria, passport etc. I'd have no problem with some stud coming in from overseas and taking a spot, provided they did that.

But I think nationalism is overrated anyway...

By the way I agree with you Brett about most things you said. The major problem with that is the great exposure and publicity that Ultimate gets from being in the AUG. But for people already playing and enthusiastic, I think they would get a better deal from playing in a standalone tournament.

Just to keep the rumour mill grinding along...

There is definitely some grumbling at UNSW about tiering and whether a team will go.

With everything seemingly up in the air still, it's impossible to make predictions, but the natives are restless.

The problem for UNSW, and what sets us apart a little, is that the team could realistically go very deep in the tournament, as far as I can see. Tiering may make this impossible, and creates disinterest among players who actually have real hopes of winning. I don't know how many other teams, who are destined for the bottom tier, would be in the same position of otherwise making a realistic claim for the title.

Oh well in that case it was an ok decision then...

Let's get this thread up and firing again. The recent spate of tournaments should give everyone something to talk about. In the South we just had the boycott city challenge which Monash won. A very very sad day. Melbourne second and ballarat third. It looks like all the Monash pickups really have helped, as has their coach who has turned into a bit of a serious simon and is no fun anymore. Of course there were no Tas or SA teams, so we have no idea about how they will match up.

Moroney still has no idea how to handle being heckled, catching easy goals and then spiking the crap out of it.

As for east, my soon-to-be team UNSW got rolled by ANU, which surprised me a bit as ANU were not that good last year. I know nothing of this tournament - maybe someone who was there could fill us in? Or point my ignorant ass to someother thread that has details?
