It's funny how the wheel turns.

My first year at Uni and my first Uni games in 2002 were the first year in which Ultimate was part of the AUG. Martin Laird I think was the guy who had done a lot of work to get it included, and it was seen as a great step forward for the sport. Previous to that there had been a Uni championships like some other sports such as rowing etc. were last year, and not long before that it was just a more unofficial thing (I think - please correct me if I am wrong).

As I said, at the time the whole ultimate community was really happy to have Ultimate included at the AUG.
Now it seems that there is a growing dissatisfaction with the situation, mostly to do with the costs involved. In reality we are subsidizing other sports at Uni games.

Going on the evidence (20+ teams or whatever) I would say that having Ultimate in the AUGs has increased the sport's profile among uni students a great deal, which is a good thing. I guess we just have to work out whether it's worth it.

Well put P-Unit.

What exactly is the point of these challenge tournaments if they aren't qualifiers? I'm not sure how other sports feel about this but I think that AUS or whoever have just come up with a really crappy idea, at least from an ultimate point of view.

As for uni games parties, when I first started I thought they were dope but at the end I was sick to death of them. I have found frisbee parties to be pretty hit and miss, but I'd definitely prefer to hang out with frisbee players than bonehead footy players.

Though I can verify select Newcastle players were out at 3am the night before their Bronze medal playoff - only because we were still out partying.

Yeah Melbourne definitely benefited from that - we took it all serious because we really wanted to win a medal. I think Sturt was still drunk during that game. Still, good on Newcastle, somebody's gotta keep it real.

Fakulti have now been runners up four of the last five years and must be getting sick of losing finals.

Do you think Fakulti should forget about the two evenly split teams and just try and win with one strong team - surely they would be unbeatable if they did this?

Yes, but possibly not unbeatable. Just really really good.

Given that no qualification is needed, then ultimate is going to have a mob of teams falling over themselves to get to the Gold Coast.

Is this true? Sorry I'm a bit out of the loop but is there no qualification to AUG this year???

As for South, I fully believe Monash and Ballarat are good enough to make quarters. Whether they will or not is another question entirely. Melbourne's success really depends on who they pick up. I don't know if they've even started to think about it. Either way, they won't have their best possible team at LTCC, and could potentially be toppled by someone else.

God I'm starting to love this forum...

I don't think Melbourne has picked up anyone that good this year, but there's always second semester. We have bad memories of LaTrobe after losing SUG to Flinders there last time. Although Troy was TD which provided some comic relief.

We will probably not send a strong team, cos nobody from Melbourne Uni wants to go - we're a bit above it really.

The AUG team will be a similar strength to last year I reckon. All things considered as long as we've got Johnny and Friese we'll do ok.

As an aside, one of the worst things about Uni ultimate for me has always been SUG, or whatever it is called now. It's always in the middle of winter, it's always freezing, and it's always in a very cold place (Ballarat) or a shithole (Traralgon). Thankfully I will most likely not be attending the tournament this year.

yeh go monash! we should have a pretty good squad this year and i dare say put in our best performance at AUGs so far.

Not hard considering the piss poor efforts you've put in over the last few years.

Melburn Uni 4 lyfe yo.

Good to see Chilly continue the Victorian domination. I don't think any other team there was close really.

Fakulti have now been runners up four of the last five years and must be getting sick of losing finals.

As for HoS, we are happy with our tournament. Made our seed, played a bunch of tight games. Had some ups and downs. Made a lot of noise. Also made the party a lot of fun, thanks mostly to Timmers (who was the very first to get his gear off and started a big trend), Woodley (who decided to drink) and of course Party Man.

BUF has some hawt players, particularly Timmerz.

But no team I have ever seen has come close to UWA circa Perth AUG 2004.

I think that there is a photo floating around somewhere, I'll try to find it.

Yeah it would probably be Matt I guess

Good to see UCan and QUT back on the scene. The SA teams might struggle a bit - I hear Flinders are having VSU issues, and Huy Vu has graduated from Adelaide. Big loss for them. Melbourne has lost Frank (I think) and Alica Daly, and their 06 "super pickups" KP and Wheely aren't guaranteed to make the trip again.

At the moment I'm not an enrolled student but that will most likely change very soon. Either at Melbourne or another Uni that I will not name until I have further information. I'm hoping to eventually set the sad record for most consecutive AUG appearances.

Scamby is going to a wedding this weekend I think, with a few other of the Chilly players.
104  Regional / Australasia / Re: About time we had a Nationals dicussion thread on: March 05, 2007, 09:15:44 AM

Seppo - Scamby is retired, Gack's not making the trip, Dan Rule left to form HoS (taking a handful of Chilly B'ers with him), Tao Browne's name is absent, as is Shingo's...I don't know about any others.

Ummm, I'm pretty sure Scamby is not retired
