3rd at Nats and 3rd on the AFL ladder! oh yeah!

Oshep plays AFL for the Western Bulldogs?

Thanks Rubes.

So the Aussies have USA first up, then Taiwan to finish day 1.

Day 2 is GB then Japan.

Day 3 to finish is Canada, then a playoff.

Very exciting.  Can they repeat 2005 by knocking off the USA to make the Final against Canada?  Go Aussie.
In 2005, Australia beat Canada to then meet USA in the final.

Also Di has arrived in the country for the last 2 training camps, so everyone is on board the team now.

I second Simmo.

Well how about this for a system...

- Each team nominates 2 players (of each gender if it's a mixed tourney) for MVP.
- Each team then votes 5-4-3-2-1 from the list, but only for teams they've played against, and not their own team.
- Total votes get divided by the number of teams faced (eg: if Tiger gets 20 votes and Fakulbee played 5 teams, his score would be 4.0).

The Martin Laird Award voting, using the AOUC model, seemed very good at AUGs. The 2 winners were very deserving in my limited opinion. And since captains will really only offer a vote to players they play against, Simmo's tweak to factor in games played is a good solution.

I wonder why 9 out of the 10 male MVP vote-getters at Mixed Nats are receivers...

ok, Twiggy, this thread is for you.

Who is TD for 2009 Nats?

Don't worry Owen, I'm sure they'll let you tag along in an official "knowing the rules" position. Then whenever there's confusion you can come in and explain it to everyone in that special way you have that leaves everyone still confused, but happy to just let you tell them what should happen so they don't have to listen to any further explanation.

sweet burn. i had a shocker during that rule discussion - got totally confused by a foul call (offensive?) mixed with a stall.

that's why i made sure my teammates had copies of the rules - they've got to use them and keep me quiet.

I don't know anything about the girls but assuming all guys are fit and available I'd pick

Tom Rogacki
Matt Dowle
Ant Dowle
Mike Nield
Pete Gardiner
Jonno Holmes
Tim Lavis (or mum would kill me) / Gavin Moore

Which I guess means Pottsy and Owen are cut

i talk up Chris on my blog, so he cuts me from his fantasy team - some gratitude Wink

at least Lavis can spell his own name correctly, if not others... Wink

pete liddi tells stories of the old usyd/unsw rivalries of 100yrs ago, but an AUGs showdown would be something!

well, that makes some of us feel old - those of us who played 4 AUGs before Pete even picked up the plastic.

gather round one day, and i will tell you the tales of "Uni Championships" 97...

11  Regional / Australasia / Aussie teams on tour on: July 15, 2008, 10:36:40 AM
Here is a thread about the Aussie teams on pre-tour.

The Dingos (Open) are hitting up San Francisco, Santa Barbara, and Boulder in the Rockies.
Full itinerary on our website: http://sites.google.com/site/australiandingos/usa-tour-2008

The Firetails (Women) are going to San Francisco, Seattle and Portland.
See more on their blog: http://firetails.blogspot.com/

The Barramundis (Mixed) are playing in San Francisco, Santa Barbara and Portland.
I don't know if they will resurrect their 2004 blog: http://barramundis.blogspot.com/

The Dingos, Firetails and Barramundis have their first games this weekend.

The Thunder and Terra (Junior teams) are playing other junior teams in Seattle in a week.

The Taipans (Masters) will have a game in Vancouver vs Blackfish just before the tournament starts.

Expect news posts on www.afda.com too.

Predictions anyone?

You can use an online blog aggregator/reader if you like.

Here are some:
http://my.yahoo.com/s/about/rss/index.html
http://reader.google.com
http://www.bloglines.com/
http://www.netvibes.com/

All are simple to operate. First 2 are accessible through a yahoo or gmail account if you want.

Some even suggest blogs to subscribe to ("hey, you subscribe to Brisbane Ultimate Blog. Try the Ballarat Ulti Blog").

But a single website taking Aussie ultimate feeds would be a good promotion tool for showing the browsing public what is actually out there...
14  Regional / Australasia / Re: Rules questions on: April 30, 2008, 08:58:01 PM
Here is a challenge for an IT type.

Develop an online quiz.

Brief:
- multiple choice questions
- questions can be plugged into the quiz (or removed). use a database?
- quiz gives you your score at the end and states which questions were answered correctly or incorrectly

Optional:
- can integrate into afda.com
- can be linked to afda number (so you can label the quiz result as belonging to you)
- can reference which rule number applies for each question
- questions can be labelled by difficulty/obscurity (so a quiz can have a mix of easy and hard questions)
- questions can be labelled by rule areas (so a quiz can have mix of questions on fouls, field dimensions, picks, marking etc)

if you choose to take this challenge, let me know. Or if you can adapt an existing application/program already out there, all the better.

I have already written a couple of rules quizzes in my time, but having a large centralised database of them would be a more useful tool.

also, Singapore ultimate once had an online quiz, but I can't find it...

What is the "standard" draw format?

Newk, I agree that fatigue is often a big factor. But you can minimise it. Chilly have won Nationals the last 3 years, and this is partly because they were smart enough to take more players than just about every other team. 20 in 2005 (most of any team), 19 in 2006 (ditto), 18 in 2007 (not the most). It might have been 4 in a row, if they hadn't taken 14 in 2004 (beaten by Southside with 18). If fatigue is affecting your team, a bigger roster appears to be the best solution.
