16  Regional / Australasia / worlds08 - open v mixed on: November 11, 2007, 08:36:04 PM
hey peeps,
i'm having a bit of trouble deciding between these teams as my first preference. my feedback from the selectors has been encouraging with respect to the open team and i've been compiling a list of pros and cons, but would love to hear some alternate points of view. the decision has to be made pretty soon.
what reasons did you have for making the preferential choice you made?

some of the factors weighing my decision include defending the barramundis spirit title, winning a medal (which team is more likely to do this do you think?), quality of the opposition, role on the team... i believe there is a perceived difference in prestige between the two divisions, but i'm curious what people's thoughts on this are. i mean, unlike the difference between open and mixed nationals title here in oz where the open title carries more honour, at worlds you're still representing Australia! given how few people put the mixed team as their 1st choice, there must be a strong belief the open team is where its at? or maybe its simply about having 2 shots at representation with the mixed as a fallback?

thoughts?

hey seppo
yeah, the whole of pool D is a mess, with the lower seeds chain going 3-0. furious did lose 6-15 to sockeye at regionals, so something must've gone awry somewhere along the way. did they break a few of their key players?
(wow, jam have a very impressive roster this year.)

noticed kiwi kim van berkel playing with condors, anyone know of any folk from down under on the rosters?

I keep wondering when the ANU Alumni are going to be a force to reckon with at party tournaments like Halibut.

i keep wondering when my fellow canberrans will realise that qld is a far better place to spend a weekend in winter than this icebox

Man, ANU seem to have gone soft ever since Lee, Liddicoat and Mortimer left.

don't forget halliday, barr, lye - integral members of the ANU party squadron. and if they even managed to get kwong to drink beer AND tequila, you'd think they'd be able to convert horan, hingee and twats. alas...

having looked at the WUGC2008 site, http://wugc2008.com/ , there isn't much up yet... but here is a pretty detailed bid document. looks like the Aussies will have a HQ nextdoor to the Finns and Irish.

more importantly, they've got the aussies right next to the beer garden!! Grin

"Any player who is not accepted into NUFL in a core roster or as a free agent is effectively out of contention for the Men’s, Women’s and Mixed teams for Worlds 2008."
Anyone know what this means for OS based players? i.e. Sol, Bralow.
How did it work for them previously?

where's that quote from ruebs? i still haven't seen anything more than a proposal of selection procedure, not a finalised selection policy.

if i recall correctly last worlds had 3 compulsory selection camps, 2 in syd and one in canberra at the AIS. the overseas based players were required to attend a minimum of 2 of the 3 compulsory camps in order to be considered. they duly flew home and attended. not sure which events o/s players must attend this year though. i'm kinda curious how can any big names not attend nufl and be granted spots if nufl is the main selection point this year. not that i would deny matt (is slated to play one nufl, but not yet registered for worlds selection!!) and joel, they are good players, but you need consitency for all players. i know someone else, a rookie with a very strong case for selection in either women's or mixed, in a similar position, who can't attend nufls but wants selection. its a dangerous precedence without a selection policy.

ps. hey tom, thanks for the look-off...
28  General / Ulti Strategy / Re: How to Poach Properly on: May 24, 2007, 01:41:50 AM
i was kinda hoping oshep would post on this topic, much respect for his poaching styles. thanks.

to expand on one point about poaching on weaker throwers - you must also recognise that if they get off an easy dump to a strong handler, are you gonna get toasted? when poaching, like all good defense, its good to try and stay a couple of seconds ahead of the offense and that includes recognising the likely flow progression/dump swing etc. (ie who is about to get the disc.)

i generally mark handlers and poaching off the dump is a little diff to poaching off a cutter. in general, i rarely poach off my player if they are a stronger thrower than the player with the disc. weaker throwers means tighter man defense around the disc (and a poach in the alley  Wink) is more likely to earn the team the turnover - you can't give them an easy reset. pretty obvious really.

also, keep this type of poach short, most people are trained to look to dump on about a 5-count. you gotta be man up again by then, so listen to the stall count and be back guarding your player by the time you hear 5.

just wish i spent as much time as oshep has, playing with the dowle-rods, to cover my arse when it all goes sour!
29  Regional / Australasia / Re: WUGC 2008 on: May 21, 2007, 04:05:48 AM
hey brett,
i agree with matty on that one - sign up!

you'd take billy over JD? hmm..
to make the argument more interesting, do you wanna assign approx. O/D, handler/receiver roles to your team? for balance. just for fun...

oh, btw drule's name is down for mixed selection. make of that what you will.
