Shouldn't all you kids be in school or something, instead of taking over Ultitalk?  Wink

Point 1: As Ellie has pointed out, it's not Matt's call on the format. That is an AFDA decision. Don't whinge to him.
Point 2: Every player should be doing all that they can to help the TDs. Being a TD is a thankless job, and a fair bit of work. If you have legitimate concerns or questions, you're completely entitled to raise them and talk to the organisers, but don't go and annoy them or try to retaliate (e.g. spam campaign). It shows a lack of respect, and it's certainly not going to be effective.

Having said that, this discussion is good.

I'm not going to say much about this. I mainly want to respond to Kablamo's point, that playing 4:3 would give the boys more game time without reducing the girls' time.

You're correct. An extra boy = more time on the field for the boys; same number of girls = same time on field for girls. Considering the current ratio in the tournament (as Cupcake has pointed out), that's not an unreasonable idea at all.
The biggest problem with going to 4:3 is not actually reducing the game time for girls. Adding an extra boy can frequently reduce the roles that girls play in the team, meaning that they're simply less involved as the boys take over. Sometimes it doesn't happen, but it's fairly frequent in mixed Ultimate.

One of the incentives (and there were several) behind the original decision to play 3:3 in non-Worlds years was that it would force teams to keep their girls involved. It's not about game time as much as it is about involvement.

As much as it is frustrating from a players' perspective, I still think it's worth persevering with for this year's tournament. As youth Ultimate is changing considerably every year, it's important that the AFDA continue to review the decision for each tournament, but I think that until youth Ultimate is more established in this country, it's a good way to go.

Johnny Mac

yea that all makes complete sense and i agree that girls should have equal roles on a team as guys but whether its 3:3 or 4:3 it wont change a thing if boys want to exclude the girls...they can still do it quite easly....just the same as girls excluding guys....when they have the disc...but as ive said before...i can see the reasoning behind it...it just think that 4:3 would be more beneficial for the development of this sport with Juniors
37  Regional / Australasia / Re: Youth Nats 3:3 or 4:3 on: June 24, 2007, 05:19:39 AM
even in the adult plays when they play mixed its usually (to my understanding) a 5:2 format favoring guys...why? because there are alot more guys interested in the sport than girls...

Which, I'd guess, is the point - the AFDA wanted to make girls a bigger part of the sport, which is why they made the ratio equal. If there are more girls playing Ultimate, then there are more teams, which means bigger and better competition, which means growth for the sport!

Now that they've seen how it could effect the state of play (some teams not being fielded as a result) then I guess it isn't looking like such a great idea. But they're only human - even though I've seen that Matt Dowle guy play, and sometimes I'm not so sure human beings were supposed to jump that high.

And at the end of the day it is their decision, like I said, and I'm pretty sure we can trust them to know how we should be playing Ultimate.

Yea i can see why it would help the growth of the sport....but there just isnt enough girls there to play to help it grow...so restrictingt he guys play time to match the girls we have double the numbers to them seems.....kinda stupid...now im not being sexist or anything...it just seems kinda dumb playing 3:3 rather than 4:3 which as state above would bring it back to regular ultimate...and not discriminate against the girls....seeing as they keep there 3 members on the field...and the guys...who are a much larger number (atleast at this tourney) an extra spot for playing time......which would help to develop their skills since they get more experience in game situations.....which is what the tournament is about after all

Yea tiger i can see the point of keeping it equal...and being a development year and all

there just isnt nearly as many girls interested in ultimate as there are guys... and it doesnt seem right that we get restricted down to 3 on the field just to keep it fair....even in the adult plays when they play mixed its usually (to my understanding) a 5:2 format favoring guys...why? because there are alot more guys interested in the sport than girls...
39  Regional / Australasia / Re: Youth Nats 3:3 or 4:3 on: June 24, 2007, 04:13:24 AM

we shouldnt be playing a modified version of ultimate just because they "higher-ups" want it to be fair between guys and girls....when that simply isnt the case
all the girls know that the guys out numbers them in alot of cases nearly 3:1 and all the girls ive spoken to are infavor of the 4:3 rule over 3:3
it just seems stupid to me that we keep things "balanced" between guys and girls by playing 3:3 rather than playing 4:3 which infact doesnt hurt the girls at all and gives the guys 1 more spot on the field....which is a good thing since alot of teams (like my own) are running 7-9 guys and 4-6 girls.
