1  General / Ulti Strategy / Re: Rule discussion on: May 02, 2010, 02:39:15 AM
Yo Seppo,

I think you misread the rule... A defender running into another defender is definitely a pick if the defender was chasing an offensive player at the time and chasing the offensive player results in the contact or need to avoid contact...

Hey samusx84,

Welcome to UT!  Smiley

The following is the definition of a pick according to the UPA 11th edition rules:

  • A pick occurs whenever an offensive player moves in a manner that causes a defensive player guarding (II.G) an offensive player to be obstructed by another player. Obstruction may result from contact with, or the need to avoid, the obstructing player.
  • A pick can be called only by the obstructed player and must be announced by loudly calling pick immediately after it occurs.
  • If play stops according to XVI.C, players reposition according to XVI.C.4. In addition, the obstructed player is then allowed to move to recover the relative position lost because of the pick.

So a defender running into another defender is not a pick.

As for a receiver slowing down, you can definitely "box out" and jockey for position, but I believe the defender could announce a violation if the offensive player intentionally slow downed to cause contact (and possibly a foul) but was not intending to go for the disc.  This would be akin to an offensive player intentionally smashing into (i.e. tackling) a defender who was going for the disc.

FOUL!  Wink

On your third point, I think UPA may be different to WFDF as it doesn't refer to marking your own player. It just says if there is another O player within 3m of the defender. Hence multiple defenders can crash a disc on Zone D if there is just one popper within 3m of all of them.

Also, a double team is a marking infraction and can't be called after a throw. If you attempt to throw even whilst an Double team exists, then that is your decision. If it hits the second illegal defender, too bad. Double team is not a foul.
3  General / Ulti Strategy / Re: Incidental Contact or Foul? on: March 29, 2010, 11:22:26 PM
WFDF Rules have the following

12.7. When a player is making a play on the disc, an opposing player may not move to
intentionally impede that player’s movements, unless they are also making a play on the
12.8. Every player is entitled to occupy any position on the field not occupied by any opposing
player, provided that they do not cause contact in taking such a position.
12.9. When the disc is in the air, all players must attempt to avoid contact with other players,
and there is no situation where a player may justify initiating contact. “Making a play for
the disc” is not a valid excuse for initiating contact with other players.
12.10. Some incidental contact, not affecting the outcome of the play or safety of players, may
occur as two or more players move towards a single point simultaneously. Incidental
contact should be minimized but is not considered a foul.

as well as

17.8. Blocking Fouls:
17.8.1. A Blocking Foul occurs when a player takes a position that a moving opponent
will be unable to avoid and contact results.

So my understanding is if the defender wasn't making a play at the disc, and intentionally moved to impede an offender in motion, then its a Defensive foul. Also, if they put themselves in a spot where they know contact is unavoidable thats also a foul. If they were both cutting and making a play, then yeah, its tough to tell who was there first and who initiated the contact. Even a slight touch to the hand can cause a dropped catch so incidental is a tough one to claim.

6  Regional / Australasia / Ulti on TV - Totally Wild - Anyone got copy? on: December 23, 2009, 06:14:22 PM
Hi All,

Does anyone have the segment on Ultimate at Australian Uni Games from Totally Wild? Was on TV a couple weeks ago.

7  General / Ulti Talk / Rule discussion - Double Team in WFDF rules on: November 30, 2009, 09:59:12 PM
Hi All,

Just wanted to throw this out there as a situation that happened recently at the Australian Mixed WUCC qualifyinh tournament. Maybe Rueben with his rules knowledge maybe be able to shed light assist or any one else can throw their 2 cents in.

Defence is playing zone defence. Offense is near the endzone trying to score.
A player on O is right behind the cup. Defensive player in Cup crashes on disc.

Stall count hits six and Player with disc calls Double Team. Player in cup contests call on basis that popper is within 3 metres. All of this is uncontested and no problems with it to this point.

My problem with this rule is that as soon as the "contest" from the defensive player occurs, its a stoppage in play. Even if the O player immediately realises their mistake (and thats what it was, not intentional), the contested call results in a stoppage and a restart with a check. In this time, the player with disc has a chance to make eye contact with a free player in the endzone and is set to make an immediate throw for score as soon as disc is checked in.

As such, the incorrect call by O results in a stoppage giving them time to gain composure, check out the field and determine their options, where as the defence can do nothing to stop it. The only alternative I see is for the Defence not to contest, at which point, we have to drop the stall count by 2 despite not infringing the rules, and give the offence more time to make a play for their incorrect call.

As I said, are there any ideas out there for why this is acceptable. Given I havn't played the game for a long time (18mths), then perhaps the rule used to be worse and this is a much improved version. I dont know. Happy to see different points of view.

Am I right in saying that if you are in the bottom pool of 4 then you cannot make the pre-semis but can finish as high as 7?

It looks to me someone who finished 9th or 10th (still in bottom pool) can make it as high as 5th, by winning every game from pre-semi. Assuming the losing teams from the 3-6 pre-semi play the winners from the 7-10 pre semi. No problem there especially as seeding seems to be 1/4 history, 1/4 educated, then half the number of spanners in a sidchrome toolkit to get the result.

Anyway, what i am saying is it doesn't really matter. If you finish in top 6, then it looks like you can make the final (fair enough). If you make the top 10, it looks like you can make it to 5th if you play well in the playoff games and if not, then i'll see you at the bar.

15  Regional / Australasia / Re: Mixed Nationals 2009 on: August 30, 2009, 07:51:05 PM
OK, so all qualifiers have been run and won...so who is going and who are the early favourites?

Spiderpig beat Newcastle, with Kaboom and Cream also up there. Not sure beyond that. I hear there's a bit of controversy with Cream as well and their non-attendance at the UFNSW AGM. With Kaboom and SUUFA not in the fight for spots, has anyone actually missed out?

As far as I am aware, all sydney teams who wanted to qualify made it through. After taking Suufa and Kaboom out, Climbing the Hills will take the 4th NSW spot, 5th Over the Hills , 6th Gong , 7th Scapegoats (reversing the pool play result against fodder in positional playoff), Cannon Fodder 8th and Special Sauce 9th.
