3  General / Ulti Events / women tourney mar. 12-13 on: January 28, 2011, 07:47:12 PM
We are hosting our College Open tourney the weekend before and are
supposed to host our HS tournament that weekend but interest is fairly
low right now. Since we have all the fields I am checking for interest
in a College Womens tourney. It would take place in Carrollton, VA on
March 12-13, 2011. This is the second weekend of a lot of peoples
spring break but if I can get some interest we will do it. I will get
the tourney sanctioned so you can knock out some of the required
games. Email [email protected] if you are interested.
4  General / Ulti Development / Re: Teaching Beginners to Read The Disk on: January 24, 2011, 06:23:04 PM
Biggest thing about learning to read the disc is doing it but there are some things to explain. In simplest terms if you can see any of the top of the disc its bending/curving toward you and if you see the bottom of the disc its bending/curving away from you. If nothing else that simple knowledge should help people start to move in the right direction. I would say mayeb just throw up some lofty throws and let them watch the disc move as well. But beyond that its doing it.

7  General / Ulti Talk / Re: Gloves? on: January 03, 2011, 09:45:04 AM
Something interesting to add to this whole gloves thing, I saw this on ESPN about a week ago maybe. They were doing some testing to show you how your body reacts to the cold and tying it to sports. They put some guy in a refridgerated trailer for 15 minutes then had him do the same tests he had done at room temperature. Anyway grip strength dropped by 45% by that point in time. So it seems that the issue might be less of wet or dry and more of that fact that your hands are colder and can't grip as well.

11  General / Ulti Media / Re: The BEST Ultimate T-shirts on: December 08, 2010, 09:35:00 AM
If you're in the USA why order shirts from Vietnam (frisbeeclothing)?  If you're comparing with Patagonia and want Patagonia fabric...order from Patagonia.  They're on your doorstep, manufacture in the USA and are super eco-ethical.

Second that, there are tons of companies in the US Canada that are great to work with and can do all the same design and printing stuff if not more, and you don't have to get it shipped 1/2 way around the world which will undoubtedly take longer and cost more $
12  General / Ulti Strategy / Re: question about cutting on: October 27, 2010, 10:06:32 AM
For ease of talking lets call our cutters 1, 2, 3, 4 from left to right, like most everyone does.

Second it sounds like you have 1 and 2 cutting at the same time and both in, obviously thats not the case we don't want two cuts at once.

As a handler I'd be looking to dump swing and get the disc back to the middle first and foremost. But if I was going to jam it up the side I'd be looking for 2 first and for him to drag his cut toward the sideline a little, while 1 goes out and sets up the second in cut. I'd probably be looking for 3 to go deep which would be a low percentage option but would be a great setup for an in cut to 1 or 2. I'd probably expect 4 to just drag it down the field and wait for the play to start to develop and cut based on that. The only time I'd expect anyone to make a cut across the field might be high stall count or if all the other players ended up deep somehow and he had to the whole field to work with, otherwise he'd be clogging up all the other cuts like you said.
13  General / Ulti Strategy / Re: Positions on: October 12, 2010, 07:01:07 PM
If you are talking about offense then there are 2 basic positions handlers and cutters. You could get a little more in depth and say underneath cutters and deep cutters, if people are better doing one or the other. At the high levels of ultimate most people are versatile enough to do both handling and cutting though.

15  General / Ulti Talk / Re: Rules - weird loophole? on: September 23, 2010, 06:30:37 PM
Yes, but in the text you posted the receiver is the offender. So indeed, either the disc goes to the offensive player or the disc goes back. While the defender has it in its hands...

Unless I misread the rules you posted of course (thanks for looking them up, these are indeed the rules I was referring to).

Manuincolae has it right.  The defender who intercepted the disc is still referred to as the "defender", not "receiver" (even though he received the disc).

If the call is uncontested, the disc goes to the (would-be) receiver at the point of the infraction, and if contested it goes back to the thrower.  So, yes - unless the foul is retracted, the disc stays with the offense.

And by the way, good luck with getting a retraction - the type of player to call a foul that never happened, is probably the type of player who wouldn't retract such a brutal call.  Put it this way - I've seen a lot of bad calls over the years, but I can count on one hand the number of retractions I've seen.  So, bad luck for the guy who makes a great D and gets called with an invisible foul.

This rule is one way in which the rules favour the offense.  On that subject - here's another gem: UPA 11th Ed., XV.D - "If offensive and defensive players catch the disc simultaneously, the offense retains possession."  A lot of hearty disagreements come to mind  Undecided

I'd have to agree about the number of retractions I've seen, maybe 5-10 in like 8+ years.

I'm not really sure your point on the simultaneous catch thing though. Tie goes to the O in everything, tie goes to the runner in baseball is a perfect example. Most sports tend to favor the O in that sort of thing. So I don't really have a problem with that and cant really think of any arguments I have seen over that.
