I wanted to see what other frisbee players would do in this situation...

Here in London, UK, there are two top open teams who are both going to worlds in Prague in a few months. I'm on the seconds for the better of the two. The captain of the other has asked me to go along to tryouts with the chance of playing with them at worlds. I prefer my current team (friends, 1st team is the best in the country, better long term potential) but there's no way I would make it into the firsts this season and therefore no chance of going with them to Worlds, not this time anyway. (there are more details but i'll save it)

So my choices are go along to one of my teams main rivals with a chance for the experience of worlds or miss out, (i wouldn't go as a spectator) and stay loyal. Loyalty is a massive thing to me...at the moment I'm not really even tempted to try out for the other team but wondered what others thought.

I'd go to worlds with the other team if I could make it. You might never have another chance in your life to go to worlds. You don't know whats gonna happen in the future, you could get hurt, team could fall apart, etc. If the people on the other team are your friends they would understand that.

Agreed.  If the people on your team really are your friends, they wouldn't begrudge you the move to go to worlds.
I went to WUCC in '06 and it was incredible.  No way I could make the same team today, only 4 years later.
Passing up an opportunity to compete internationally is not a matter of loyalty.

If you are being offered a certain place on the team going to worlds I'd take it for sure.  Worlds will be awesome, and you might just find out that your main rivals aren't that bad a bunch.  Hopefully you'll then be able to go back to your current team next season.

I'm sure defecting for a season wouldn't prevent you from returning to your current team.
