Being new to strategies and all i would like to pose a question. We have put together a squad of around 34 players to enter a national tournament and now we are deciding on teams. We have picked two teams of 17. The rules of the tournament are at least 7 players on the field 2 of which are female and 5 guys.

My question comes to the substitution. Should we pair up cutter with cutters and handlers with handlers and substitute on point to point basis or as they get tired and need a sub. Or

Split the 2 teams again and then after say 2 points or so substitute the whole team so in other words 7 go on the field and 7 go off the field.

What are the thoughts on this

Thanks

When it comes to any team, it's obviously smart to categorize the players into handlers and cutters.  But when you throw the coed factor in the mix, it gets a bit more complicated.

Pairing cutters and handlers is a nice thought, but only in a perfect world.  What really happens in a game(s) is that people get tired, teams go on scoring streaks., etc.  It's not always feasible to keep the same pairs or even complete 7 player squads on the field at any given moment.  This is where the coach/captain has to think on the fly and substitute players as he/she sees fit.

Your best bet is to designate one or two people on the sideline who can follow the game's progress and dictate substitutions as necessary.

Cheers!

Ditto on the captain thinking on the fly and getting one or two others to help think it through.

What I do, for the more serious tournament/games, is classify everyone as handler/cutter and as offense/defense, and then some as combo's where they excel at both (of either criteria). Of course every player has to play both O and D, but some are more awesome or have more of a preference to play one or the other.

Then when the line is called for a point, there's a better chance of getting the more appropriate mix and numbers on the field.
