I just wanted to get in early and start the Nationals 2008 topic.

Bids from the Eastern Region (NSW/ACT) are due by 31 August (to announce host at Mixed Nats), with preferred dates for the event Thursday 24th April to Sunday 27th April 2008.

Should I book my flights for Canberra?  Is it true Bathurst are looking to bid?

Bathurst better be putting in a bid to host. Possibly the greatest town and bunch of people I've met playing this game so far.

Re: who hosts Nationals, how is it decided? Is it like the Olympics, and it's basically whichever city is the larger player in the world economy while it pretends to be the most environmentally friendly. If so, Canberra, I'd start painting your grass green right now.

It's in a different region each year. Last year was South (Vic, SA, Tas) where Melbourne was the host. This year is East (NSW, ACT). It's a bidding process, where the bidders have to present to the AFDA how they will host the event. The AFDA then decides who has the better bid. Did that make sense?

Yep - at least I think I can see where you're coming from, Cupcake.

Nationals 2007 = last year's Nationals.
Nationals 2008 = this year's Nationals.

And cheers Simmo, that clears up a lot. Has anyone managed to drive the four hundred hours up to Bozza in his ivory tower at CSU and see if Bathurst are putting in a bid?

As the person that effectively would make or break a Canberra bid, my money is not on canberra.

Sorry. I'm not interested in hosting, won't have the time next year and might not even be in Canberra by then.

For Tiger - if nobody from the East region bids, it becomes open to anyone to bid, although the AFDA would take the geography into account in assessing the bids (ie if there were two equal bids, and one was from a high population/easy access place, and the other wasn't, the former would likely be selected).

North is due to host Mixed Nats 2008, and Brisbane is already starting to have quiet drinks about it.
