I've been called a travel, because of "changing direction" rule and I'm not sure if it should apply:

- I have been running straight towards the zone,
- I caught the disc, while touching the ground with my right foot only,
- immediately placed the left foot slightly to the left and established pivot,
- pivoted strongly to the left and thrown.

In a word: I changed direction at the moment I received the disc, before the first and only step. Can you talk about changing direction, when there is only one step involved?

We were playing according to WFDF rules and I'm still not sure if the travel should stand even after reading the relevant section:

C. Traveling: If the receiver is moving when he or she catches a pass, he or she shall be permitted the fewest number of steps required to come to a stop and establish a pivot foot. Further, a receiver who catches the disc while running or jumping may continue to run and throw a pass so long as the throw is released prior to the receiver making three contacts with the ground and that he or she makes no change in direction or increase in speed during his or her tenure of possession. Violation of this section shall constitute traveling (see 404.16(C)).

i know the rule on traveling is that you have 3 steps IN the same direction to slow down if needed and can still  throw but if you can stop and clearly establish a pivot it wouldn't be a travel but if you were running and kept running changing direction, travel

From the rules coupled with your description, you were coming to the least possible number of steps to come to a stop and establish a pivot (land on right foot, put down pivot foot wherever you want). Shouldn't have been called a travel at all. The change direction in this case is irrelevant.

That shouldn't have been a travel.  Everyone makes mistakes though, not the first and not the last time a ref will make a bad call.
