Hi all,

I started playing ultimate frisbee yesterday and something is not clear to me.

They tried to explain when to throw a backhand and when to throw a forehand. Had something to do with the disc comming from behind if you do the wrong throw.

Can anyone make it any clearer to me? I tried to find it but google didn't quite help me out Smiley

Hey Eddy,

Welcome to UT!  Smiley

There really isn't a hard-core rule which dictates when you should use a certain throw.  I think what you will find is depending on if you are throwing the disc more to your right or more to your left in conjunction with having a defender guarding you will dictate the throw to use.

For example, let's say I have the disc (and I'm right-handed) and I want to throw it to a teammate on my right.  Because there is a defender in front of me, using a backhand throw would not be smart, since it would mean the disc would travel a course between me and my defender (easy for him to defend).  However, if I use a forehand throw, I can keep the disc away from my defender, allowing for an unobstructed throw to my teammate.

Hope that makes sense.

Scoober Huck ftw!  But seriously, Brodie does have some excellent videos.  Getting the flick down took me about a month to perfect, and I couldn't flick huck to save my life.  But after months and months of playing, I gained distance, but still lacked consistency on accuracy.  After watching his forehand video, I was able to huck full field with my flick.  All I needed to do was grip the disc harder.  You'll find things like these the longer you play, but getting a start with proper mechanics (as taught by Brodie) will help a ton.

Practice doesn't make perfect.  Perfect practice makes perfect.
