Hi everyone, just would like to pass along some pics from my Ultimate Frisbee experience.  The very first Ultimate Frisbee tournament to be played in North Korea was held this Aug. I happened to be in Pyongyang and was invited to play!  Although it started off as three teams mixed with foreign tourists, aid workers, and North Korean guides, as the afternoon progressed we had the chance to interact with locals off the field and teach them how to throw.  Government agents were mixed in the crowd and tried to keep the locals moving along to minimize contact with us foreigners, but everyone was having too much fun and eventually they gave up and even joined in!  During a break we had a great BBQ lunch with the famous singing waitresses of Pyongyang, did a bit of dancing, and even convinced our minder to purchase a BMW trunk load of black market beers - at this point some of us less serious players kinda drifted away from the tournament for a little less intense Frisbee play with the locals.  For those that stuck with the tournament I can report that proudly, and in the communist fashion, each team won one game, and one of our North Korean guides scored and thus became the first North Korea to score in Ultimate Frisbee.

Teaching the locals how to throw.

Hey jferris,

Welcome to UT!

I must say, this post and the Flickr photos that accompany it are fantastic.  I love hearing how Ultimate is spreading far and wide.  It's such a great sport, and look how it's bringing people together in a country known for it's oppressed peoples.  Great to see the smiles on their faces.

I also loved reading the article (http://www.globaltimes.cn/NEWS/tabid/99/ID/673965/Ultimate-diplomacy-in-a-Pyongyang-park.aspx) that accompanies the photos on Flickr.  Superb!

Thanks for sharing mate.

Cheers!

No problem!  While I don't really play the sport it was a wonderful experience and I'm glad to share.
