So I love numbers and I was recently trying to compare the upcoming AUDL's chances of success and I started to look at player statistics with other comparable professional leagues to try predicted the AUDL's chances of being viable.

So as I have previously mentioned the Major League Lacrosse is a professional Lacrosse league with (8 - 10 teams) where a entry level player's are paid around $6000, the average player makes $14,000 and top players make around $30,000.

Looking at the college participation rates (http://www.usaultimate.org/membership/statistics.aspx and http://www.laxpower.com/participation/Participation2005.pdf) in 2005:

Ultimate - 11157 players
Lacrosse - 13080 players

Growth rate over the previous two years (I would have done longer but can't get stats for ultimate past 2003)

Ultimate - 12.1%
Lacrosse - 2.2% (10 year growth rate for lacrosse was 4.25%)

College players in 2010:

Ultimate - 17568 players
Lacrosse - 16390 players*

*can't get accurate player stats for lacrosse but can get stats on the number of teams from wikipedia so have assumed squad sizes have stayed relatively consistent since 2005 (which is a pretty safe bet).

So it now looks like more players play college ultimate than college lacrosse!

Growth rates from 2005 to 2010:

Ultimate - 9.5%
Lacrosse - 4.6%

So over the last 5 years college ultimate has still been growing over twice as fast as lacrosse. I would suspect the development of a professional league would only encourage more players to play college ultimate as well.

Thought it was interesting food for thought.

So does anyone else think this bodes well for the AUDL?

Nice analysis Chris.  Certainly the growth of Ultimate has been tremendous and when you look at people who play overall, has more participants than sports like lacrosse and rugby combined.  I expect the growth to continue, as this is an easy sport to get involved with (not a lot of costs to buy a disc and get a pickup game going).  Lacrosse has had better organization on the collegiate level as far as legitimizing the sport, but ultimate is closing the gap quickly.  With professional lacrosse getting 10k+ attendance regularly, we feel that in time, those numbers are not unrealistic in the future of the AUDL.
