I just saw on facebook that the AUDL has posted up a map of where the league is expanding into in the 2013 and 2014 seasons:

http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=203855204088609332234.0004b24ad19e1de220961&msa=0&ll=42.032974,-90.791016&spn=35.383476,78.662109

It depicts of all the cities that will have teams in 2012, as well the planned and sold expansion teams for 2013, and the planned and sold expansions teams for the 2014 season!

Looks like they have already sold franchises into:

Boston
New York
Washington DC

And for the 2013 season they are planning to sell franchises into:

Chicago
Toronto
Madison
New Jersey
Pittsburgh

There are too many to list for the 2014 season, but it suffices to say that the 2014 expansion will be into all the major ultimate hubs.

Though it is very interesting to know that the Seattle and Charlotte franchises have already been sold for the 2014 season.

I can't help but view this a very positive step for the AUDL and think it's time we all help spread the word about the AUDL, by liking it @ http://www.facebook.com/pages/American-Ultimate-Disc-League/148314748537921 and getting the word out there to our friends.

I wonder what a franchise costs?

And I wonder if they will managed to sell all their 2013 franchises in time for the 2012 season?

I'm surprised that there is no plan for a team to expand out of somewhere in Colorado....

I'd be surprised if anything was set in stone when it comes to the expansion teams.

I imagine in reality if there are good expansion locations and a potential owner in that location then the AUDL will likely consider allowing a franchise to be launched there.

I'll just quote what I commented on the map...

Quote
"The biggest fault that this league could make other than not advertising properly (Picking up Brodie for the AlleyCats is essentially picking up the perfect advertisement) would be expanding too quickly. Take the, once-successful, USFL for example, they were gaining momentum against the NFL but they tried to expand to too many teams too quickly and it backfired on them. There needs to be building process before it gets too large, you need to develop a core audience and expand upon it. Add 2-4 more teams this coming year and then sit back and weigh your options. Wait for cities to clamor to have a team to support in their own hometown and then jump on the opportunity. Ultimate is a wonderful game but with the creation of this league, it now needs to function as a business as well. This league can't be the stepping stone, it needs to be a successful and slowly growing throughout the vast reaches of time."

Adding the New York, Boston and D.C. teams seem to be full proof as all of the areas could (and should) be ones who would support an AUDL team to the fullest. However, expansion beyond that should not be set in stone at this point. I'd love to see a team in Seattle as I think it'd be very successful but the league would be spread out pretty thin between all the northeastern teams and the few (Maybe only one) teams out west.
