why would not holding them in sydney solve the current issues. If teams like CSU/ANU are gonna look off a short drive to sydney, why would they go anywhre else in NSW?
It was a poor attempt to cheer JMac up :p

But I'll bite anyway - everyone outside Sydney perceives Sydney as being a very expensive city. Accommodation, getting around, food & drinks, etc. I'm coming up for ECC to be a volunteer and after paying $180 for flights, I'm having to budget myself about $300 for other expenses. Any other city and it'd be half of that for 3 days/2 nights - I'm planning to come to Halibut and I've already found $25 per night accommodation that's a 10 min train ride from the fields.

No one that currently goes to ANU is on ultitalk, so I think its time that I step in and stop the lynching.

ANU lost about half of its experienced player base from last year and does not quite yet have the replacements that are commited enough to play a tournament. It might be lucky if it makes AUGs. Shenanigans is going ahead thankfully.

I could go on - but I got work to do and I don't even no what I wrote makes sense.
It did until that sentance...

Though I'm feeling what you are saying Matty, and I'm hoping that ECC can be a success this year to point where interstate (and the rest of NSW unis not in attendance this year) can be convinced that it is worth the effort to travel to attend, making it all the better and more worthwhile in future years. Then hopefully Australian frisbee folk, won't be caught out with "holidaying / conference / work / international students" excuses over the ECC tournament period (one of UQ's big problems), and it can become a set piece of the uni frisbee schedule, which it hasn't been up here in QLD (and I'm assumming other states other than NSW) for a long time.

Johnny, the kids nowadays are all about prioritization, no love for the frisbee like we had back in the day.
Let's not be too critical of Johnny he probably plays more tournament Frisbee than almost any other Queenslander... plus if you think Johnny is prioritises his life over frisbee too much I hate to think what you think of some of the other Queensland players... Tongue

Though just for the record - I'd be at ECC in a flash if I was eligible.

I bet they wouldn't even play Unimpact ultimate given the opportunity!
I know I wouldn't...

Sorry kids - wasn't hating on anyone too much... I was reading it while waiting for the NUFL shemozzle to resolve, which was kinda my mood killer at the time of posting...

Matty, well said. I agree with most of your post. Good analysis.

And just for the cost record, I went to the (minimal) effort of posting on Ultitalk about billets, and that had three people replying to me offering to house the entire team. We're also planning to do some simple cooking at the house to save money there (though I should probably check that with Hayley :-) )... It ain't hard to save some money.
By the way, Simmo, that's not directed at your post... I know you're aware of this... just a general statement to people that tourney fee + travel are the main non-negotiables, a lot of other stuff is often up to individuals/teams (and yes, I know this is sometimes different for uni tournaments).

And as for a roster, we were originally coming down savage... we only picked up a couple of subs randomly in the last few days...

But yeah.
I guess my summary is...

Play more tournaments. They're fun :-D

Consumer choice, as Matt said, is great for the sport. Part of the debate for this, however, is the 'official nature' of unigames. Sure, go to random tourneys and IVs, and you will be playing because you really love playing ultimate (who doesn't!). But then you bring in the official uni games, where there very definition of it says that it's about uni teams competiting to see who is best, and to get some AUS bling around your neck at the end of the week.

THEN you bring in ECCs, which is a strange mix of the two. It's more expensive than your random tournament. I think this is why people have differing feelings about it. People are hesitant to pay money and travel to play a tournament that is officially unofficial in that it has no effect on AUGs.

AUGs is so popular because it is as official as you get, with a clear winner and fun all week. You know you get your monies worth and it's worth training and travelling there. This is the allure, whereas ECCs you get the uni games branding and merchandise, but in the end it's just another IV.

Hey folks,

The Aussie Junior teams are looking for some match practice during the week of ECC, as they have their camp at the same time. Piers and Fatty (as coaches of the Open/Women's teams respectively) are keen to bring their squads up against Uni All-Star teams, comprised of players from ECC.

We're currently looking into field possibilities - first preference is Meadowbank Park if we can get it, or else as close by as possible so that we don't have to move much for the games (the coaches are happy to bring their teams to us). The game would be held on the Tuesday night, 8th July.
The aim would also be to make it happen relatively early (i.e. as early as is suitable to All-Star teams, Junior teams, and TD/field arrangements) so we aren't cutting too much into valuable party time :-D

This is just an announcement - no nominations or anything yet. Please spread the word amongst your ECC teams so players can think about whether they're interested in a game.
This game would be a massive help to the Juniors in their Worlds preparation, and would be a fantastic chance to play with a pack of great players against a bunch of young punks with a point to prove. It'll be a tremendous showcase :-)

So yeah. Think about it, boys and girls alike, and spread the word to your ECC teams.
Further details coming... maybe here, maybe when we get there in July, dunno...

P.S. Bring it, Thunder.
