True, but I don't like the idea of hoping for a weak link on the opposition O line.

Hopefully the rest of your team is heads-up enough to help cover!

The scenario I'd envision would be one of your front three or four matched up against a natural deep (big, athletic guy/girl).

Presumably his counterpart is playing deep in your clam--if the deep can't see a player streaking from the front of the stack for the endzone, and drop off to cover, ...it's probably time to shift your concerns to shutting down this one monster instead of messing around with a clam set.

Other adjustments might include having your mark get in the way to shut down deep strikes in the transition..there are ways to minimize damage there.  And if you're worried about your weak D link getting exposed in man after the clam transition, what else would be your alternative?  Zone?  Man is seemingly a no-go already.  You have to work with what you have, make adjustments.
