Just thought that with this many Ultimate Players in one place, there has got to be a great deal of information of how to start, develop, promote, and advertise a league. Any information on how your local league does this would greatly help other leagues (like mine) to grow and promote the sport.

Here in the UK there are a few major leagues to speak of...

Due to its team density, London has its own summer league maintained through http://www.londonultimate.com/ The site has a forum to help inter-team communication for planning events, help pickups find a team and suchlike. It also has an e-group to let people know the important details for events (tournaments) like location, faciltites, nearest tube etc.

The Ladder league was created almost a year ago to help promote 'friendlies' between local teams to get them playing competitive games more often.
http://www.regionalultimate.co.uk/ It uses an extremely complicated equation to 'rank' teams; however rather than simply putting the most wins at the top it factors in games played, so a team that has played and won 5 games would be lower down the league than a team that has played 75 games and lost them all (I think). This was praised as a great idea as it gives teams an incentive to play more friendly games more often however it suffers a little because many games are not logged onto the system (although the point is really that the games are played in the first place). As a whole it has been successful as more teams have been playing friendlies against each other.

There is a regional 'winter league' that happens once a month in each region during winter (usually the 1st/2nd sunday of the month); this has been going for several years now and each event pretty much runs independantly, using the results from the previous event to schedule fixtures. Games for the winter league count towards the ladder league, although are seldom entered onto the site. Each region has its own mailing list/e-group to facilitate planning/pickups/etc. Sometimes suffers poor turnout because of the weather.

Essentially to start a league you can just get in contact with some local teams and ask them all to come to the same place to play games; if there is enough interest then it will grow pretty much of its own accord.
On a side-note, there is an e-group for development of ultimate in the UK which covered the development of leagues a little while ago. http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/ukdev/ you can read the old messages online (might have to join to do that; although you can leave the group afterwards).
